Wrapping things up in Rome: Ostia Antica and a day around the Colosseum

Getting outside of the city is always a good call in my experience.  In 2013 when I visited Rome, we took a trip to Tivoli and it was an unexpected highlight of the trip. This time, we went for the #1 recommended day trip, which was both easy and cheap to get to, as well as totally worth it.  I haven’t had the chance to get to Pompeii yet (it’s on the list) but this stop was a good substitute (so they say) and made for a perfect day of running around for the munchkin. Since we stayed close to St. Peter’s train station, it wasn’t too long of a ride (in the range of 45 minutes, including switching trains and getting slightly confused at one point.

There was a small farmers market just around the corner from the entrance to Ostia Antica, so we loaded up on some meats…
